March 25th, 2006 Naw Roz Concert in ABQ

AAWW BR.

We celebrated our 2006 Now Roz (New Year) in style. We invited Ameen Shugaee and Najer Jan Balitz from Freemont California. We want to thank them for their efforts in coming to our state and sharing some great music with us.

Naw Roz in Afghanistan had some traditions that I would like to share with you.

1. In Mazaar Sharif, Jandah Balamisha (A long flag pole with prayers written on top) is lifted by the Governor of Mazaar and the elders while Quran is read. Ali(R) was known to have taken the seat to become the 4th Caliph during the time of Naw Roz. Historians in Afghanistan say that people have seen images of Ali(R) praying in different parts of the country during this time.

The sick will bring their nazir and pray to Allah for healing and some people are miraculously healed during these days.

1b. Gulie Surch in the Mazaar province is a hillside that becomes green and beautiful. There are red tulips that cover the hillside in between the green vegetation. It's a wonderful site that signals the coming of Spring and Summer. Visitors from all over the country and surrounding countries will come to view this spectacular site.

2. In Kabul, at the same time, another Jandah is lifted by the Mayor and the elders of the community. Quran is read and cannons fired when the lifted prayers are at their highest. People will dress in their new clothes and have a fair by the mountains. In the fair some of the toys/foods that are popular are as follows:

Toys: Marac, Kitabchai Shaitan, Firfirac, Girgiranac, GudiParan, Aspaki Chobi

Foods: Rice/Spinach, Gilabi and Mahi, Kulcha Nawrozi, Haft Mewa, Mewa Tarkada.

Kids enjoy carousel rides and eat desserts while the young adults partake in kite fighting tournaments and adults enjoy the great foods.

Men will send sweets and gifts to their fiancee, women will gather together to eat, sing and dance and "step on grass" and make foods like Samanak.

3. Sheep and rams are colored in red/green paint and are shown off by the farmers for sale. The people and animals walk on the land to soften it and prepare it for a harvest.

New Year is a time to forgive one another. To celebrate and look forward to a healthy and happy times. A time to enjoy each others company and make more effort to change bad habits and pick up better ones. A time to check on your fellow brothers and sisters and have good thoughts towards one another.

Enjoy the upcoming year,
Peace Be upon you
